Paul VI celebrated its Senior Night in style last Friday as Idreis Augustas rushed for 253 yards and five touchdowns, leading the Panthers to a much-needed double overtime win over Gonzaga. And fans paid attention — or at least PVI fans did. But there were tons of great plays in that game so check out the others! NOTICE: If DigitalSports is not at your football game check back on Wednesday afternoons for highlights and a box score! That way you can relive it all over again!

1. Idreis Augustas touchdown
This is a run of a man possessed. He gets past one tackler, splits two more and then drags the final Eagles before getting over the goal line. Think Augustas wanted that win?

3. Tommy Chroniger 31-yard touchdown run

4. Holy Cross Carly Sullivan game-winning goal

WCAC Football Poll: Week 8

WCAC Football Top-10

1.    Good Counsel, 8-0/5-0, LW 1
The Falcons are getting the big plays from Jelani Jenkins, Caleb Porzel, Tyler Campbell, E.J. Scott and Mike Wallace on offense. But they still had way too many turnovers against St. John’s. That’s something that, despite the talent the Falcons have, could end up biting them come playoffs.
Next: Saturday at Gonzaga, 2:30

2.    DeMatha, 7-2/4-1, LW 2
DeMatha is on a roll and certainly looks better now than when it faced Good Counsel. Tommy Chroniger seems to be getting more elusive as a runner and Marcus Coker is developing as a bruising back.
Next: Saturday vs. St. John’s, 2:30

3.    St. John’s, 6-2/4-1, LW 3
It wasn’t pretty for St. John’s on Friday but nobody has put up a good game against Good Counsel. The Cadets just committed too many turnovers to win. This week’s game against DeMatha could show more about just how good St. John’s is.
Next: Saturday at DeMatha, 2:30

4.    O’Connell, 5-3/2-3, LW 4
The Knights have now lost two straight against the WCAC’s top two teams, Good Counsel and DeMatha. This has forced them into a three-way tie with Gonzaga and McNamara. The Knights have a blowout win over Gonzaga under their belt and need a win over McNamara to reach the playoffs.
Next: Saturday vs. McNamara, 2:30

5.    Paul VI, 3-5/1-4, LW 7
The Panthers finally pulled out a close win over Gonzaga. Just think, if they had held on to beat McNamara and topped St. John’s in double overtime, the Panthers would be well on their way to a playoff spot right now.
Next: Saturday at Archbishop Carroll, 2:30

6.    Gonzaga, 2-6/2-3, LW 5
The Eagles put themselves in a much tougher spot after losing to Paul VI. It doesn’t get any easier from here with Good Counsel next and St. John’s after that.
Next: Saturday vs. Good Counsel, 2:30

7.    McNamara, 4-4/2-3, LW 6
Bishop McNamara needs to beat O’Connell, simple as that. If they do, they’re in the front seat for the fourth playoff spot. If not, they’re out.
Next: Saturday at O’Connell, 2:30

8.    Bishop Ireton, 4-5, LW 8
The Cardinals beat up on St. Mary’s Ryken, the other pseudo-WCAC team, this past week to end its losing skid. Sidewell Friends, who has only two wins in which one came against Ryken, presents an opportunity to get to .500.
Next: Saturday at Sidwell Friends, 2

9.    Archbishop Carroll, 1-7/0-5, LW 9
The Lions fell to McNamara but didn’t go without a little roar. The two teams were tied at 7 before McNamara scored two straight touchdowns. Carroll also caused a safety.
Next: Saturday vs. Paul VI, 2:30

10.    St. Mary’s Ryken, 1-6, LW 10
Another loss but Ryken has a week off to mull things over and keep on improving.
Next: Friday, Nov. 7 at Bullis, 7

Monday Morning Quarterback: Week 8

Weekly Awards

Offensive Player of the Week: Tyler Campbell, Good Counsel
Campbell had his second perfect game of the season – with the other coming against DeMatha – in a blowout win over St. John’s. Campbell went 9-for-9 for 198 yards and has been a major reason why Good Counsel has established itself as the conference’s clear frontrunner.

Defensive Player(s) of the Week: DeMatha Stags
The Stags shut out a very good O’Connell team and seem to be rolling now. DeMatha, who almost posted a shutout against Gonzaga last week as well, pounced on four turnovers.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Caleb Porzel, Good Counsel
Porzel unseats St. John’s kicker Matt Elsasser because he continues to rack up the special teams touchdowns. This time he returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown against St. John’s.

Offensive Play of the Week: Idreis Augustas, Paul VI
Augustas ran in a 14-point touchdown in the second overtime to give Paul VI a dramatic win over Gonzaga. Augustas rushed for five touchdowns and 268 yards on 36 carries. OK, he definitely could be the Offensive Player of the Week, but let’s spread the love. Either way, Augustas deserves MAJOR props.

Defensive Play of the Week: Paul VI
It wasn’t the greatest overall performance for the Panthers defense, but Paul VI held Gonzaga to a field goal in the first possession of a second overtime, allowing the Panthers to finally pull out a close win.

Quote of the Week: Coach Pat McGroarty
“Not today.”

Round-Up

Game of the Week: Paul VI 41, Gonzaga 38 (2 OT)
Who would have thought this would be the game of the week when the WCAC’s first and second-place teams (Good Counsel and St. John’s) faced each other and the third and fourth-place teams (DeMatha and O’Connell) also met. This one was a slugfest that came down to the wire. Must mention that Gonzaga quarterback Kevin Hogan threw for 301 yards.
FULL VIDEOS HIGHLIGHTS TO COME!

Bishop Ireton 51, St. Mary’s Ryken 0
Ireton is like St. Mary’s Ryken in that they are both independents largely competing in the WCAC. Now Ryken can see an example.

Bishop McNamara 27, Carroll 9
The Mustangs get a win over an improving Carroll team after losing two straight games. Quarterback Kevin Clark ran for one touchdown and threw for another as McNamara put up a balanced offensive attack.

Good Counsel 42, St. John’s 3
The Falcons got the usual from Jelani Jenkins and Caleb Porzel — five touchdowns combined — and a perfect game from quarterback Tyler Campbell, which is starting to also become the usual. Turnovers hurt St. John’s. FULL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS TO COME!

DeMatha 41, O’Connell 0
Turnovers killed the Knights and
DeMatha is starting to get going. They Stags have now scored 76 points
in their past two games and have allowed just 6 points. Tommy
Chroniger’s legs are a major weapon. FULL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS TO COME!

WCAC Football Poll: Week 7

WCAC Football Top-10

1.    Good Counsel, 7-0, LW 1
Good Counsel made short work of McNamara but St. John’s will be a different story. Then again, I thought the Good Counsel-DeMatha game would be a barn-burner. Good Counsel blew out O’Connell who nearly beat St. John’s.
Next: Saturday at McNamara, 2

2.    DeMatha, 5-2, LW 2
The Stags beat up on Gonzaga in D.C. but will likely face a more challenging test this week against O’Connell. Tommy Chroniger continues to impress with his running abilities.
Next: Saturday at Gonzaga, 2

3.    St. John’s, 6-1, LW 3
The Cadets are becoming the master of pulling out close games. Ed Thomas continues to impress and even quarterback Robert Cadle is getting a lot of reps and doing well. St. John’s needs to keep it close against the Falcons and hope to pull it out.
Next: Friday at Good Counsel, 7

4.    O’Connell, 5-2, LW 4
O’Connell was tied with Carroll at halftime. Joshua Trimble had 19 rushes for 95 yards to pull the Knights to a win.
Next: Saturday vs. DeMatha, 2

5.    Gonzaga, 2-5, LW 5
The Eagles had a lot of momentum going into the DeMatha game. They have to try to get up again realizing that Paul VI is a very good team hungry to get a win.
Next: Friday at Paul VI, 2

6.    McNamara, 3-4, LW 6
The Mustangs slip below .500 and it’s looking difficult for them to get into the WCAC playoffs. They need to beat Carroll on Saturday and then hope to take out O’Connell. McNamara’s defense needs to step up after being thrashed the last two games.
Next: Saturday vs. Carroll, 2

7.    Paul VI, 2-5, LW 7
You’ve got to feel for the Panthers. In the past three weeks they’ve taken Bishop McNamara, DeMatha and St. John’s to the wire and come up with three losses to show for it. This may be the week to rebound.
Next: Friday vs. Gonzaga, 7

8.    Bishop Ireton, 2-5, LW 8
Ireton lost its second straight against Riverdale Baptist and is struggling without the senior leadership it had last season. A game against Ryken could help ease the pain, however.
Next: Saturday vs. St. Mary’s Ryken, 2

9.    Archbishop Carroll, 1-6, LW 9
Carroll gave O’Connell a run for its money in perhaps the most surprising game of the weekend. There’s no doubt that the Lions have talent, but can they put together a full game and win?
Next: Saturday at McNamara, 2

10.    St. Mary’s Ryken, 1-6, LW 10
It’s not pretty in Southern Maryland now, but I have no doubt that Bob Harmon and the Knights are working hard and will improve in the coming seasons. They have another chance to improve against a team like themselves, an WCAC football outsider.
Next: Saturday at Bishop Ireton, 2

Monday Morning Quarterback: Week 7

Weekly Awards

Offensive Player of the Week: Ed Thomas, St. John’s
Thomas led St. John’s to a double overtime win over Paul VI. He threw five times for 109 yards and two touchdowns passes, including the game-winning touchdown pass. He also ran 26 times for 111 yards and one touchdown that tied the game to send it to a second overtime.

Defensive Player of the Week: Louis Young, Good Counsel
The possession after catching a 40-yard touchdown pass against McNamara, Young picked off a pass and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Matt Elsasser, St. John’s
A third time straight! Elsasser has really proven to be a weapon at Coach Joe Patterson’s disposal. He booted two field goals, one from 31 yards and another from 23, and went 4-for-4 on extra point attempts.

Offensive Play of the Week: Jeff Knox, DeMatha
Knox took the end-around handoff and turned the corner against Gonzaga. He was soon met by a Purple Eagle but the 6-foot-3 Knox leapt over him and stretched the ball out over the goal line. Just awesome.

Defensive Play of the Week: Raheem Cardwell, DeMatha
Cardwell intercepted Gonzaga’s first pass of the second half, setting up a DeMatha touchdown that started the rout on Saturday. Otherwise, it could have been a close game.

Hit of the Week: Marcus Coker, DeMatha
This marks the first time than an offensive player gets hit of the week, but Coker deserves it for running over a Gonzaga player on this 5-yard carry. You have to watch closely but this is a railroad collision.

Quote of the Week: Raheem Cardwell, DeMatha
“Smiling starts enthusiasm.”

Round-Up

Game of the Week: St. John’s 34, Paul VI 27 (2OT)
These two teams went back-and-forth all night. Paul VI running back Idreius Augustas kept the Panthers in the game with 132 yards rushing but Ed Thomas was just too much down the stretch as he relied on his legs to pull the Cadets most of the way and his arm to win it in double overtime.
(VIDEO OF THIS GAME HOPEFULLY POSTED IN THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS)

DeMatha 35, Gonzaga 6
The Stags needed to show they could handle a team and they did just that behind a balanced effort. DeMatha did most of its damage on the ground behind Tommy Chroniger, Marcus Coker and Aaron Conaway.

Good Counsel 42, McNamara 6
Caleb Porzel and Jelani Jenkins did their thing, rushing for 112 and 72 yards, respectively, and combining for two touchdowns. Louis Young had a standout game on offense and defense as the Falcons continue to roll over their WCAC competition.

O’Connell 20, Carroll 14
The Lions certainly put more of a scare into O’Connell than many would have expected.

Riverdale Baptist 20, Bishop Ireton 14
The Cardinals gave a good Riverdale Baptist team quite a challenge but came up short, losing their second straight game.

Sidwell Friends 40, St. Mary’s Ryken 0
The Knights are shut out for the second straight game and fall to previously winless Sidwell Friends.

WCAC Football Poll: Week 6

WCAC Football Top-10

1.    Good Counsel, 6-0, LW 1
After a 41-14 win over O’Connell last Friday, it’s beginning to look like Good Counsel and everyone else.
Next: Saturday at McNamara, 2

2.    DeMatha, 3-2, LW 2
The Stags were challenged by Paul VI, which either shows that DeMatha is beatable by someone other than Good Counsel this year or shows that Paul VI is a whole lot better than 2-4.
Next: Saturday at Gonzaga, 2

3.    St. John’s, 5-1, LW 3
The Cadets are getting closer and closer to knocking DeMatha out of the No. 2 spot. They can make a case for that by having a better showing against Paul VI than DeMatha did. St. John’s is loving the maturation of Ed Thomas at quarterback.
Next: Friday at Paul VI, 7

4.    O’Connell, 4-2, LW 4
The Knights lost their second straight game against a top WCAC opponent but did play hard against Good Counsel. O’Connell is still in good shape and in the driver’s seat for a playoff berth.
Next: Saturday at Archbishop Carroll, 2

5.    Gonzaga, 2-4, LW 7
A win over McNamara is huge for the Eagles. A win over DeMatha would be much, much bigger. The offensive line will have to step up again for the Eagles.
Next: Saturday vs. DeMatha, 2

6.    McNamara, 3-3, LW 5
There wasn’t many good things to take from Saturday’s game for McNamara. In more bad news, Good Counsel is next. However, this could be the perfect opportunity for McNamara to erase Saturday’s memory.
Next: Saturday vs. Good Counsel, 2

7.    Paul VI, 2-4, LW 6
The Panthers have shown they have the ability to challenge some of the WCAC’s top teams. They weren’t far behind DeMatha and were extremely close to beating McNamara. Now they just need to win one and they get another chance Friday.
Next: Friday vs. St. John’s, 7

8.    Bishop Ireton, LW 8
The momentum Bishop Ireton gained in a win over previously undefeated St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes was lost in a loss to St. Christopher’s. The offense put up 21 but the defense can’t give up 45 points.
Next: Friday at Riverdale Baptist, 7

9.    Archbishop Carroll, LW 9
Carroll couldn’t handle St. John’s and O’Connell won’t be much easier if at all.
Next: Saturday vs. O’Connell, 2

10.    St. Mary’s Ryken, LW 10
St. Mary’s Ryken is still taking its lumps but has a chance to get its second win of the season Saturday as it faces winless Sidwell Friends of the MAC conference.
Next: Saturday at Sidwell Friends, 2:30

Monday Morning Quarterback: Week 6

Weekly Awards

Offensive Player of the Week: Alan Elder, Gonzaga
Elder ran the ball 23 times for 193 yards and four touchdowns against a McNamara defense that has done fairly well against the run this season. Also kudos to Gonzaga’s offensive line that was just owning the line of scrimmage.

Defensive Player of the Week: Sam Oyekoya, Gonzaga
Oyekoya was an absolute monster on the defensive line. He had five sacks against McNamara and several more quarterback pressures, allowing Gonzaga to consistently stunt McNamara drives.

Special Teams Player(s) of the Week: St. John’s
The Cadets stuffed Carroll in its own end zone for a safety. It was St. Johns’ second safety with the other coming via defensive tackle Andre Monroe.

Offensive Play of the Week: Caleb Porzel, Good Counsel
Porzel’s 90-yard touchdown run against O’Connell was unbelievable. First, he nearly fell in the backfield. But he gets up, scoots through the line and busts up one sideline. Then he crosses nearly the entire width of the field and then goes back to the original side for the touchdown.

Defensive Play of the Week: Kevin Hogan, Gonzaga
Not only did Hogan play well at quarterback, the sophomore also had a spectacular game at safety. Hogan picked off two passes near the end of the first half to keep the Eagles ahead going into the break.

Hit of the Week: Chris Townsend, Bishop McNamara
Townsend just continues to blow people up. This time he shot through the line on a sweep to the right and knocked the Gonzaga runner backwards. Said one Gonzaga fan on the sideline after seeing the hit, “That’s kid right there is a player.”

Quote of the Week: Alan Elder, Gonzaga
“We’re not great. We’re not unstoppable. But we feel confident about ourselves.”

Game of the Week: DeMatha 21, Paul VI 13
Not many people would have thought this would be so close. DeMatha took a 21-7 but the Panthers cut that to one touchdown and two-point confersion on a run by Idreius Augustas, who ran 14 times for 71 yards. The Stags were buoyed by 141 rushing yards and two touchdowns by Aaron Conaway.

Round Up

Good Counsel 41, O’Connell 14
In a potential playoff matchup, Jelani Jenkins and the Falcons rolled. Jenkins scored three rushing touchdowns and Caleb Porzel added some fireworks of his own. But the Falcons had too many penalties for Coach Bob Milloy’s liking.

Gonzaga 26, McNamara 7
The Eagles picked up their second straight WCAC win behind a big game by senior running back Alan Elder, two interceptions from quarterback Kevin Hogan and a slew of sacks. Gonzaga looked in control throughout the game.

St. John’s 35, Archbishop Carroll 12
Ed Thomas scored one touchdown passing and another running and the Cadets notched two safeties in beating Carroll. The Lions did, however, score the game’s first touchdown.

Riverdale Baptist 38, St. Mary’s Ryken 0
The Knights are shut out again and haven’t won since their season opener.

St. Christopher’s 45, Bishop Ireton 21
The Cardinals can’t win two straight, falling to a strong St. Christopher’s team.

Football: Gonzaga 26, Bishop McNamara 7

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Gonzaga had just finished off a 26-7 win at McNamara when the team broke huddle with a cheer, “Beat DeMatha!”

“Beat DeMatha. I like the sound of that,” one Gonzaga player said, as if it was a novel idea.

Beating DeMatha and getting back into the WCAC hunt would have seemed farfetched for Gonzaga two weeks ago. But now, after the team’s second straight conference win and its first over McNamara since 2005, Gonzaga believes it can play with anybody in the WCAC.

“We’re not great, we’re not unstoppable,” senior running back Alan Elder said. “But we feel confident about ourselves.”

Elder ran for 193 yards and four touchdowns and the defense notched nine sacks, including five by senior defensive end Sam Oyekoya, and four interceptions.

That’s a drastic change from the story coming from I Street just a couple weeks ago when the Purple Eagles lost to O’Connell, 40-0, to fall to 0-4 on the season. After losing to the DCIAA’s Coolidge, 36-34, in Week 1, Gonzaga was outscored 124-0 in its next three losses.

The Eagles didn’t notch their first win until last week when they came from behind to beat Archbishop Carroll, 38-16.

“It was real tough because Gonzaga has a real good reputation and strong seasons consistently,” Gonzaga sophomore quarterback Kevin Hogan said. “To start out 0-4, we needed to bounce back. And we feel like we’re bouncing back now.”

Gonzaga stands at 2-1 in the conference, tied for DeMatha and ahead of O’Connell. So as strange as it sounds, the Eagles have it all laid out in front of them with games against DeMatha, Good Counsel and St. John’s ahead. And right now, that doesn’t scare Gonzaga.

“We feel like we can compete with anyone,” Hogan said. “We started the season off slow, but McNamara’s a good team so we feel like we’re opening some eyes in the WCAC.”

Gonzaga opened some eyes quickly as they drove 68 yards in five plays in its second drive. The first play on the drive was a 48-yard run 5-foot-5 senior running back Alex Beauboeuf. Elder capped off the drive with a 6-yard plunge to give Gonzaga a lead it would never give up.

With their next possession, the Eagles scored again on a 2-yard run by Elder, who ran five times for 36 yards on the drive. McNamara (3-3, 1-2 WCAC) got the ball with a 13-0 deficit and ate up 18 yards on its first play, by far its longest play yet of the game. Oyekoya answered with two straight sacks that left McNamara staring at a third-and-26.

Oyekoya said Coach Joe Reyda told the defensive line that it was going to be alone in rushing the quarterback as the Eagles opted to drop extra players into coverage. The defensive line did its share and more, pestering McNamara quarterbacks James Joseph and Kevin Clark throughout the day.

“When they got into a situation where all they were going to do is pass, we knew we just had to go – beat the man in front of you and make plays,” Oyekoya said. “Nobody ever wants to be the person to give up the play in a big situation. Everybody on the defense wants to be the person to make that play.”

McNamara had two solid drives near the end of the first half but both ended with interceptions by Hogan, who plays safety as well as quarterback.

The Eagles’ momentum carried over into the second half as Elder took a handoff on the second play from scrimmage 57 yards for a touchdown that gave Gonzaga a 19-7 lead.

“I could drive a truck through that hole,” Elder said.

Elder continued to run wild in the second half and Gonzaga’s defense was superb, bending to McNamara at times but bearing down with sacks several times in critical situations.

Overall, it was the best the Eagles have played all season and it came at a much-needed time.

“We feel confident in what we can do on offense and defense,” Elder said. “We have players stepping up, just making plays right now and the coaches really did a good job adjusting to do whatever it takes to get us to win some games.”
