It is a common thought that good things come in three’s. But all one would have to do is witness the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys’ basketball semifinal contest Sunday night for evidence to the contrary.
With the score tied at 53 with just under a minute remaining in the game, DeMatha’s Jerian Grant — who wears jersey No. 44 — proved that good things come in four’s as well.
Grant hit a layup over the outstretched arms of a Bishop McNamara player to give DeMatha a 55-53 lead.
The shot proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Stags of DeMatha advanced to the WCAC title game with a 59-56 victory.
“I just [saw] that they had a big man on me,” Grant explained of the late-game basket. “I saw my chance to get to the basket and finished strong.”
Added DeMatha Coach Mike Jones: “I think he saw he had the mismatch. He had a big guy on him, and Jerian is very good at getting it to the basket.”
Grant had a game-changing fourth quarter as he tied the game at 49 with a three-pointer just minutes before his go-ahead basket. Only seconds after the basket, he converted two free throws giving the Stags a four-point, 57-53 lead.
In addition, the junior also took a charge late in the game that took away a McNamara basket, and scored nine fourth-quarter points in leading DeMatha with a team-high 15.
“He had three huge plays, not even counting the free throws down the stretch,” Jones said. “He also had the charge which was definitely the play of the game.”
“Coach told him at halftime, ‘Jerian Grant, you are the X-factor in this game, you can win this game,’ so he really stepped up,” DeMatha’s Quinn Cook said. “After that three-pointer, he really got going.”
McNamara was led by the hot-hand of guard Rashad Whack as he knocked down six three-pointers, five in the first half, en route to his game-high 28 points, albeit in a losing effort.
“Credit should be given to McNamara,” Jones said. “That is a very good representation of what our league is about. That was great basketball, a great game, and they had a player who played wonderful tonight in Rashad Whack.”

It is only proper to defend what is yours, what you have worked so hard for to obtain and hold on to.
For the Gonzaga Purple Eagles, it captured the right to defend its WCAC title with a 57-48 victory over Paul VI in the WCAC semifinals Sunday night.
Gonzaga jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led for the duration of the game. After gaining a a 10-point, 27-17 lead late in the second quarter, Gonzaga was able to keep the lead in double digits for the better part of the contest.
“I though tonight, the kids did an incredible job from start to finish,” Gonzaga head coach Steve Turner said. “We wanted to do a good job of the boards. They are a big, physical team and when we played them at home last time, they did a really good job against us on the boards.”
Gonzaga’s Ian Hummer played an intricate part of that rebounding process and also scored a team-high 20 points in the victory.
Teammate Tyler Thornton scored 13 points in the victory as well.
“We knew they were going to crash the boards hard,” Thornton said. “Coach told us we had to box out and that’s what we did. We boxed out and rebounded well, and limited them to one possession.”
As far as defending the WCAC title, Thornton added: “It is good to defend our title,” Thornton said. “We knew it was going to be a tough road to get here, we’re here, and now we have to take care of business [Thursday].”
Erick Green led Paul VI with a game-high 23 points in the semi-final loss.
Gonzaga will now face DeMatha Thursday night in the WCAC title game originally scheduled for Monday night but postponed to Thursday, 8 p.m. at American University.
The Purple Eagles and Stags split two games during the regular season with DeMatha winning the latter on Feb. 20, 68-65.
“It is an incredible opportunity,” Turner said of returning to the title game. “A lot of people don’t get this opportunity. We split during the year and I am expecting a heck of a game from both teams.”
