Baltimore, Md. – Corrigan Sports Enterprises (CSE) and Sports America, Inc. announced the rosters for the 36th Capital Classic today. Presented by Bart & Associates the annual high school men’s basketball All-Star game, set for Thursday, April 9, 2009 at American University, pits the nation’s top prospects versus the D.C. area’s elite seniors.

Headlining the U.S. All-Stars is Milton Jennings, a 6-9 forward from Summerville, SC who was recently named to the prestigious McDonald’s All-America team and signed with Clemson University.  Averaging 22 points and 9 rebounds Jennings has led Pinewood Prep to four consecutive championships.

The Capital All-Stars will be led by Montrose Christian’s Mouphtaou Yarou, a 6-10 center who will attend Villanova University and Ian Hummer, the WCAC Player of the Year from Gonzaga, who will suit up for the Princeton Tigers next season. Among the 12-man roster are ten of the region’s premier players who have committed to some of the biggest programs in Division I.

WCAC Coach of the Year Gonzaga Coach Steve Turner will head the Capital All-Stars, while his counterpart for the U.S. team is Kevin Keatts from Hargrave Military Academy.  Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be proceeded by a 6 pm contest featuring District All-Stars versus Suburban All-Stars. Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Coyer Keeps Record Spotless
— No. 3 Oakton trailed No. 10 Mount Vernon by 19 in the second quarter, but Cougar freshman Caroline Coyer caught fire. Coyer scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the last two-plus quarters as Oakton kept its perfect record in tact and advance to the Northern Region final.
Coleman Exclamation Point — McNamara center Brandon Coleman‘s dunk gave the Mustangs a four-point lead in OT and
was really the ****** blow in a 65-58 overtime win over Good Counsel in the WCAC
quarterfinals.
Tonkins Truck — Northern guard Malik Tonkins steals the ball and dishes
ahead to Dustin Jones to put the exclamation mark on the Patriots 68-61 win
over defending Maryland 3A state champ Largo on Friday night. The 5’5″
Tonkins scored a team-high 20 points and got a lift from his coach.
Orange Crush — Fighting Hornet swingman Dennis Brown gets a huge block in the lane and, in one motion, is headed up-court for a game-clinching, transition dunk in Orange County’s 65-59 road win over Broad Run in the Region II D4 semifinals.

No. 10 — Hulk, Smash!
Montgomery County, Maryland — Jaguar junior Willie Lee, nicknamed “Hulk,” recorded 26 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists as Northwest — one year after a 1-21 season — defeated Wootton on the road in the first-round of the 4A West playoffs.

No. 9 — Three for All
Prince William County, Virginia — In a match-up of the Cedar Run and Cardinal District Players of the Year, Stonewall Jackson junior Kyani White and Forest Park senior Danni Jackson combined for 11 3-pointers in the Northwest Region championship. White won the barrage-de-trois, 6-5, but Jackson outscored her, 39-23, and the Bruins repeated as regional champs, 75-56.

No. 8 — Guerere Dagger
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — O’Connell sophomore Alex Guerere wins the puck out of a forecheck, skates in and wrists a shot over the shoulder of the Stone Bridge goalie to lift the fourth-seeded Knights over the previously unbeaten Bulldogs — who had won 48 of their last 49 games. The win earned O’Connell a spot in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League finals.

No. 7 — Johnny on the Spot
S.M.A.C., Maryland — La Plata 125-pound wrestler Johnny Thomas gets a clutch, triple-overtime victory in the 4A/3A South Region Tournament on Saturday to capture one of the Warriors’ five individual championships. La Plata qualified 11 wrestlers for next week’s state tournament, where the Warriors look to defend last year’s state title.

No. 6 — Up, Up and Oladipo!
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — DeMatha junior Victor Oladipo finishes a give-and-go with senior Marcus Rouse with the rim at eye level on the receiving end of a vicious fast-break alley-oop. The Stags beat St. Mary’s-Ryken, 55-42, in the W.C.A.C. quarterfinals. This was Oladipo’s only field goal.

No. 5 — A.J. Thomas Fires from Friendly
Prince George’s County, Maryland — In the Prince George’s County championship, and time winding down in the third quarter, Friendly senior A.J. Thomas drills a step-back 3-pointer from 35 feet out. The distance shot at the neutral site, Wise, gave the Patriots a one-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

No. 4 — Beale Un-Friendly Demeanor
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Later in that same game, Laurel junior Jerrium Beale is on the receiving end of senior Marcus Hebron‘s alley-oop pass for a jam over a Friendly defender to steal the momentum. The contested dunk was part of a decisive, 10-0 fourth-quarter run for Spartans.

No. 3 — Winbush … Winner
Northern Region, Virginia — In the Northern Region semifinals with the score tied at 57, Hayfield junior Brandon Winbush hits the game-winning 3-pointer with :03.2 seconds to defeat Mount Vernon — who entered with a 19-game winning streak — and lift the Hawks into the regional final and guarantee a berth in the state tournament.

No. 2 — HOLY Cross!
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — In the W.C.A.C. semifinals on Sunday with the score tied at 44, Holy Cross senior NaTasha Thames — 10 seconds after missing a pair of would-be go-ahead free throws — channels her inner Lorenzo Charles, and gets a leaping, buzzer-beating putback to lift her team over Seton.

No. 1 — Clark Caps Cinderella Run
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — With NVSHL Player of the Year Chris Bond absent — due to club commitments — O’Connell caps its Cinderella run, winning its first-ever NVSHL title over Forest Park, 6-5, on this overtime goal by Knight sophomore Chris Clark.

It is a common thought that good things come in three’s. But all one would have to do is witness the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys’ basketball semifinal contest Sunday night for evidence to the contrary.

With the score tied at 53 with just under a minute remaining in the game, DeMatha’s Jerian Grant — who wears jersey No. 44 — proved that good things come in four’s as well.

Grant hit a layup over the outstretched arms of a Bishop McNamara player to give DeMatha a 55-53 lead.

The shot proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Stags of DeMatha advanced to the WCAC title game with a 59-56 victory.

“I just [saw] that they had a big man on me,” Grant explained of the late-game basket. “I saw my chance to get to the basket and finished strong.”

Added DeMatha Coach Mike Jones: “I think he saw he had the mismatch. He had a big guy on him, and Jerian is very good at getting it to the basket.”

Grant had a game-changing fourth quarter as he tied the game at 49 with a three-pointer just minutes before his go-ahead basket. Only seconds after the basket, he converted two free throws giving the Stags a four-point, 57-53 lead.

In addition, the junior also took a charge late in the game that took away a McNamara basket, and scored nine fourth-quarter points in leading DeMatha with a team-high 15.

“He had three huge plays, not even counting the free throws down the stretch,” Jones said. “He also had the charge which was definitely the play of the game.”

“Coach told him at halftime, ‘Jerian Grant, you are the X-factor in this game, you can win this game,’ so he really stepped up,” DeMatha’s Quinn Cook said. “After that three-pointer, he really got going.”

McNamara was led by the hot-hand of guard Rashad Whack as he knocked down six three-pointers, five in the first half, en route to his game-high 28 points, albeit in a losing effort.

“Credit should be given to McNamara,” Jones said. “That is a very good representation of what our league is about. That was great basketball, a great game, and they had a player who played wonderful tonight in Rashad Whack.”

It is only proper to defend what is yours, what you have worked so hard for to obtain and hold on to.

For the Gonzaga Purple Eagles, it captured the right to defend its WCAC title with a 57-48 victory over Paul VI in the WCAC semifinals Sunday night.

Gonzaga jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led for the duration of the game. After gaining a a 10-point, 27-17 lead late in the second quarter, Gonzaga was able to keep the lead in double digits for the better part of the contest.

“I though tonight, the kids did an incredible job from start to finish,” Gonzaga head coach Steve Turner said. “We wanted to do a good job of the boards. They are a big, physical team and when we played them at home last time, they did a really good job against us on the boards.”

Gonzaga’s Ian Hummer played an intricate part of that rebounding process and also scored a team-high 20 points in the victory.

Teammate Tyler Thornton scored 13 points in the victory as well.

“We knew they were going to crash the boards hard,” Thornton said. “Coach told us we had to box out and that’s what we did. We boxed out and rebounded well, and limited them to one possession.”

As far as defending the WCAC title, Thornton added: “It is good to defend our title,” Thornton said. “We knew it was going to be a tough road to get here, we’re here, and now we have to take care of business [Thursday].”

Erick Green led Paul VI with a game-high 23 points in the semi-final loss.

Gonzaga will now face DeMatha Thursday night in the WCAC title game originally scheduled for Monday night but postponed to Thursday, 8 p.m. at American University.

The Purple Eagles and Stags split two games during the regular season with DeMatha winning the latter on Feb. 20, 68-65.

“It is an incredible opportunity,” Turner said of returning to the title game. “A lot of people don’t get this opportunity. We split during the year and I am expecting a heck of a game from both teams.”

WCAC Girls Semifinals: Good Counsel 66, Bishop McNamara 49

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Good Counsel was never challenged by McNamara’s girls basketball team in Sunday’s WCAC semifinals, rolling to a 66-49 victory at American University.

And yet, Falcons senior Katie Sheahin wasn’t at all surprised by that.

“I would say we definitely put in the work in practice and it showed,” said Sheahin, who led Good Counsel with 18 points.

Sunday showed just how well the Falcons (25-3), winners of 17 straight games, can perform when their game is clicking.

The Falcons will now play in their second straight WCAC finals Monday against Holy Cross after the Mustangs upended them in last year’s title game.

The team’s seniors are on a quest to win their own WCAC championship after sitting on the bench as freshman when Good Counsel won the title.

“Wanting to go to the championship one more time, there was a feeling inside that we had to get the W,” senior Sarian Snyder said.

The Falcons said they were especially focused before the game. The team went to Good Counsel’s gym to shoot around early Sunday morning and loudly prayed in the locker room before the game.

“It’s hard to explain,” sophomore Boo Abshire said. “It was just intense.”

Good Counsel, who split with McNamara in the regular season, has often struggled at the starts of games this season, but not as much recently. The came out strong against O’Connell in Saturday’s quarterfinals and did so once again Sunday.

The Falcons hit their shots early, building a 16-point lead in the first quarter. Seven different Falcons scored in the first half with Sheahin and Kyleen Armstrong each notching eight points and Bianca Hood and Sydney Lewis each adding six.

Sheahin, a 5-foot-9 guard headed to Loyola, Md., stole the show with solid ball-handling, a deft outside scoring touch and ability to drive to the basket.

“Katie’s obviously playing very confidently right now,” Good Counsel coach Tom Splaine said. “She’s Miss Do Everything for us. She rebounds, she scores, she plays great defense, she handles the ball real well.”

Good Counsel only turned the ball over once in the first half, which is quite a feat especially considering McNamara’s intense ball pressure is made to force turnovers. The Falcons had a 21-point lead heading into the half and maintained if for much of the game.

“We just got pumped up together,” Sheahin said. “We came out hyped and it showed.”

McNamara (14-11) started to crawl back into the game by scoring nine straight points to pull to 14 points down with two minutes, 16 seconds left in the game.

At that point, Splaine inserted Sheahin back into the game. She pulled down three straight rebounds and hit 3-of-4 free throws to eliminated any comeback attempt.

Taylor Brown and Micheal Bryant each scored 19 points for McNamara.
